Top Overhead Garage Storage Racks On the Market

 1. FLEXIMOUNTS 4x8 Overhead Garage Storage Rack

The fleximount provide strong and stable storage options for those looking to maximise space. Unlike other overhead storage, it features an integrated grid design. This results in an exceptionally rigid structure, I was quite happy to load the allocated weight onto it knowing that it would hold.

Unlike some other products on the market, I really liked the longer brackets. Whilst this might seem like a practical solution to making sure that the load of the weight is spread across a larger surface area, some products don’t have this. The lip on the wire grid makes sure that nothing will slide out, again a really good design feature that helps with storage.

It is definitely a two person job putting these overhead storage racks up. They are heavy duty, so a heavier weight is expected but it is not a task that you want to undertake on your own. They can be problematic putting them up, especially with the longer brackets, but these are worth dealing with as the longer brackets give you that extra piece of mind.

Things We Liked

  • Strong, sturdy and long last durability
  • Expected vertical support
  • Longer brackets aids in rigidity
  • Longer brackets evens out the weight of the load on your ceiling.
  • Grid design adds stability and lip means items won’t slide off

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Most definitely a two person job putting them up.
  • The racks and associated parts are very heavy

 2. HyLoft 00625 45" by 45" Garage Overhead Storage Rack

The HyLoft 00625 storage rack is a compact option for those who don’t have a large garage or only need a small amount of storage. Whilst the racks are adjustable, these wouldn’t be ideal for you if you have a low garage and a small space. However, they are ideal if you don’t need a vast amount of storage. The adjustable mounts make easy work when you’re trying to find a joist. I found that feature one of the best of this rack, you can move them to match the configuration rather than having to battle your joists.

The unit itself is relatively rigid, but it is clear that they aren’t made for heavy objects. While it is easy to be tempted to overload the racks and put all of your clutter on there, this isn’t the rack for you. What this rack is ideal for is light items and storage of light containers. It is ideal for empty boxes that you want off your floor but are too useful to throw away!

The bracket system doesn’t offer as much stability as other models. The brackets are short in length in comparison to other models, so doesn’t provide as much weight distribution. Again, these racks are not heavy duty and are ideal for light storage, as against tools or paint cans. Another feature of the racks is that they do hang low, which is a positive for some, especially if you’ve got large (but lighter) items that you need to store. If you have low lying ceiling or roof, this may not be the best option for you.

Things We Liked

  • Easy and hassle free installation system
  • Light weight and could install on your own
  • Perfect to install it to various desired places
  • Good space provided through the length of the arms
  • Discrete, they will fit into a corner snuggly and free up your floor

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Brackets don’t provide the same level of weight distribution
  • The arms hang low to accommodate the smaller surface area

 3. NewAge Products 40151 4-Feet Mount Garage Storage Rack

This mount garage storage rack isa heavy duty ceiling racks that is rated to a weight of 600 lbs when the load is spread evenly. The rack is height adjustable, making them easy to fit into lower ceiling areas. You can set them to between 18inches to 42 inches. This large variance between the biggest and smallest height makes it very versatile and a good fit for most spaces.

The powder coat finish is ideal for humid or damper climates as it will help keep the rack free of rust and corrosion, helping it last longer. The unit itself is very rigid if you have assembled it correctly, I found that once assembled it would quite easily fit and hold the most awkward of items, like a mattress with ease. The platform really is a good size and will provide you with much needed space in your garage or basement and the height adjustable feature is excellent at tailoring the product to your needs.

Due to the size of the rack, I wouldn’t recommend putting it up on your own, it is a heavy piece of furniture and is unwieldy when you are trying to hang it. The brackets that are included in the box are also not as long as other products of a similar size, this means that more are needed to spread the weight effectively. If you have exposed beams, this is the product for you, whereas if your basement or garage is drywall, you may need to drill holes in it to find your joists.

Things We Liked

  • Fantastic size and can store most household clutter
  • Stunning look with perfect design
  • Powder coat finish extends the life of the rack, especially in damp or humid climate
  • Height adjustable
  • Rated up to 600lbs

Things We Didn't Liked

  • It is very heavy and a two person job
  • This item is better suited to areas with exposed joists or beams

 4. SafeRacks Factory Second - 4x8 Overhead Storage Rack

The SafeRacks is a heavy duty racks that come pre powder coated and ready for pretty much instant installation. Whilst it is height adjustable, it is not as height adjustable as other products on the market. It can be set to heights from 24inches to 45inch depending on what amount of clearance you require in your garage or basement.

This tool is rated to a load amount of 600lbs, this is a lot of storage capability, but you need to make sure that when you are putting items onto the rack that the load is spread evenly. Failure to do this may result in the rack bending out of shape, or even breaking.

The rack is extremely rigid and durable, but once you have completed the installation, it may be worth cable tying the frame to the brackets as these components aren’t attached. I loved the length of the ceiling brackets in this product. It meant that the load has a good surface area to distribute the weight over and makes the entire product feel more stable and secure. I was be happy loading these racks up to the tested weight unlike some alternatives that are available on the market.

Things We Liked

  • Long ceiling brackets for extra strength, increases the load spread over a longer surface area.
  • Rated to a weight of 600 lbs
  • Powder coated so they will last longer
  • Rigid construction, they feel strong and will hold.
  • Easy installation process

Things We Didn't Liked

  • The frame and the brackets aren’t a fixed unit, use cable ties to stop it moving around.
  • Limited height adjustment capability.

 5. FLEXIMOUNTS 3x8 Overhead Garage Storage Rack

This is so unbelievably rigid and strong. The fleximount design means that the rack is integrated into the entire design rather than being comprised of two separate components. For me, it made the entire product feel a lot stronger than those where you rest the frame onto the brackets.

This is a lot less than other racks of the same size that are available on the market. However, the additional design features these racks come with, may make the loss of 50lbs worth of weight worth it.

This FLEXIMOUNTS 3x8comes with long brackets that evenly spread the load across the ceiling, whilst it can be a faff trying to find the centre of your joists, these extra length brackets are well worth it. The installation of these racks isn’t even that hard. Whilst I will always recommend an additional set of hands for added safety you could potentially do this on your own quite comfortably.

Things We Liked

  • Innovative design feature, the rack is integrated adding to stability and rigidity
  • Powder coated for a longer life
  • Strong and stable
  • Could install on your own without too much of a struggle
  • Extra-long brackets to keep the rack secure

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Extra-long brackets can be difficult to fit, especially if you have dry wall
  • They don’t have the same weight capacity as racks of a similar size

 6. MonsterRax - 4x8 Overhead Garage Storage Rack

The MonsterRax isthe storage rack that will go on forever. Your ceiling will give out before these racks do, so I strongly advise that you do not exceed the weight allocation of 500lbs and don’t give into the temptation to load them to over capacity.

It comes with the extended brackets that evenly distribute the load weight across your ceiling, so no pinch points occur, limiting the chance of any damage to your ceiling. It can be problematic attempting to find the centre of the joist, but once you have located it, all the brackets are easy to install and will hold.

The powder coating helps with staving off corrosion and rust and will keep these racks looking fresh and rust free. I really liked how adjustable these racks are, you can hang them from between 18 inches to 33 inches which gives you a lot a choice for a rack this size! For safety it is always worth erecting these with another person present, but they are easy to install as long as you follow the manufacturers instructions.

Things We Liked

  • Industrial quality steel
  • Nice powder coat finish to increase lifespan
  • Wide ranging height adjustment
  • Very strong and rigid
  • Long brackets to spread the weight of the load across the ceiling space

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Whilst installation is easy, finding the centre of the beam or joist can be difficult.
  • Better product for people with exposed joists and beams

 7. Bigbear Iron 48"x96" Garage Storage Ceiling Rack

Bigbear Iron is rated to a huge 1000lbs, which is substantially more than other products on the market. Whilst more is often better, please be warned that your ceiling joists and beams are more likely fail than this rack. So if you have any doubt in your ceilings ability to take this weight, please don’t load it up to this.

These racks are strong, sturdy and innovative. The safety lip means that your boxes or items that you are storing can’t slide forward and roll out! The rack also features a grip system, to keep your items locked in place. That combined with lip means that nothing is falling from this rack!

I found the installation of this rack easy, it makes sense with how you put it together as long as you follow the instructions. In comparison to other racks of the same size, it is very light but don’t think that it isn’t as strong as others, because it comes with advanced technology and may distribute the weight evenly across the joists to maximise storage weight capacity.

Things We Liked

  • Steel construction
  • Light weight
  • Rated to 1000lbs
  • Safety lip
  • Special grip technology

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Difficult to place in corner.
  • Someone raises the issue of metal bars

Why Do You Need Overhead Garage Storage Racks?

Overhead storage racks are the ideal storage solution for additional storage, whether you’ve got ample space but want a smarter storage solution or are low on space and trying to free up valuable floor space for your cars or other items.

If you have a small space, you want to maximise the room available you to you, overhead storage is the ideal solution. You can choose the rack depending on how much you want to store and where. The racks I have reviewed come in a variety of sizes and some will work in even the smallest of spaces. If you have a high space and a low ceiling, look to purchase a rack with good arm length so you can maximise your storage options.

Keeping your items off the floor also helps to mitigate any damage to them, whether it is storing paint cans, bikes or other sporting equipment. If you keep these items in your garage and on the floor, you may have already found that they are very easy to hit with your car. Likewise, if you’re always moving them around to store them in another part of the garage, you may damage them. The last thing you want is to drop your golf clubs and break them, when you could have used overhead storage to keep them safe and out of the way.

Another benefit of having overhead storage is that it keeps your items away from water. If you live near a flood plain or have plumbing running through your basement or garage, this is an ideal solution for you. Keeping items off the ground lessens the chance of irreversible damage in the face of an exploding pipe or severe thunder storm!

Safety was also a key component for me choosing overhead storage. On the workbench in my garage I had a lot of paint thinners, sharp tools and other items that can be dangerous in the hands of children. Putting items up high and out of sight limits their ability to get their hands on things that could cause damage not only to themselves, but to items around the area!

What To Consider When You Are Installing A Rack?

The first thing you need to consider when you are installing an overhead storage rack is the space available to you. Make sure that you are purchasing a rack with adjustable arms, so that if you have a low ceiling, you are able to shorten the distance between the rack and the ceiling. Likewise, you may only want to have a shallow storage space, even with a high ceiling. Fully check the manufactures guidelines first to make sure the rack will fit your needs and your living space.

Also make sure that if you are installing in a basement or garage you know exactly where the plumbing is. You don’t want to start drilling only to find out that you have hit a pipe. Also check and double check that you know exactly where the electrics are!

Brackets are going to have a big bearing on what overhead rack you select. If you have exposed joists and beams, I would always recommend that you chose a rack with the longest brackets possible. The longer the bracket, the better the weight is distributed across it and therefore you can hold up to the rated amount on it. If you don’t have open joists and beams and don’t want to put holes into your dry wall, the alternative may be that you purchase an overhead rack with smaller brackets. It helps to save drilling and cutting holes into your ceiling.

When you are installing your rack, make sure that it isn’t in the way of anything. Sounds simple but I’ve messed this up a few times, especially with garage doors. Make sure that you give the garage door enough clearing to be able to come back in. Likewise, if you have a door from your kitchen leading into the garage, make sure this is still able to open and close effectively. Pre planning where you will put your new overhead storage will save headaches later on!

What Rack Do You Choose?

There are so many overhead storage options available to you, the best one to choose is the rack that meets your requirements. If you have a small space, with high ceilings and closed joists and beams, look for a rack that has long extendable arms but short brackets for easy installation or access. If you have a space with low ceiling but expose beams and joists, look for overhead storage options that have long brackets and arms that can you select a shallow depth for. There really is a storage solution for everyone regardless of your space!

Safety Consideration To Adopt

It is worth noting that when looking for overhead storage racks maximum load capacity can mean one of two things. Usually it is referring to the maximum allowable weight that residential properties can handle on their joists and beams. This weight should not be exceeded under any circumstances as it can result in damage to property, injury and even death.

Maximum weight may also refer to the maximum capacity that the overhead unit can hold, it is always advised to stick to the manufactures recommendations and not exceed this benchmark. The only time that changes can be made to these instructions, is if the rating for the maximum capacity can be safely used and that is often in an industrial setting, for residential purposes, please do not exceed the values specified.

If you are installing overhead storage, it is always advisable to have someone there with you whilst you do it, especially if you are installing a larger unit. This way you can limit any strains that you put on your body, trying to drill the brackets in and installing the rack yourself. It also means that if you were to hurt yourself whilst installing, someone will be there to help you.

Check that you know where you’re plumbing and electricity supply is before you install. This could save you from any costly bills, be it medical or home. Take extra care when using power tools in an overhead environment and always make sure someone else is on hand to help.

Conclusion

If you find the best overhead garage storage, it might be an ideal solution to the modern day problem of having too much stuff and nowhere to put it. Make sure that you are choosing the correct type of storage rack for your space, be it a high ceiling in a small area, or a low ceiling in a spacious room. There really are multiple products that will serve your problem and fix your storage solutions.

If you live in an area that is humid or suffers with damp, look for products that are powder coated to keep the rust and corrosion at bay. These racks will last longer than ones that aren’t and will serve you for years.

Always follow the manufactures guidelines and don’t overload the racks, or you could be faced with a hefty bill to either fix the damage to your property or yourself. As long as you follow the manufactures specifications, you will have more floor space than you ever imagined!
