The 10 Best Trimmer Line On the Market

 1. Black and Decker AF-100-3ZP 30ft 0.065" Line String Trimmer

Black and Decker line string trimmer is designed for use in the Black and Decker auto feed trimmers. The 30ft of string line is ideal for trimming grass and other jobs that aren’t too high impact.

The string line is such an important kit designed for gardens that don’t suffer from exceptional overgrowth. It is a good purchase for people who are looking to keep the edges of their garden tidy.

The spools are easy and very quick to fit in black and decker products; the fitment of a full spool takes less than 30 seconds. As long as you don’t put the trimmer into rougher terrain such as weeding over the gravel, the string is long lasting. The centrifugal force given by the trimmer keeps the string nice and tight and keeps you cutting grass.

Things We Liked

  • Smooth easy fitment in black and decker products
  • Good 30ft length
  • Ideal for trimming back grass and uneven verges
  • Long lasting product
  • Relatively Durable

Things We Didn't Liked

  • May not fit models outside of Black and Decker products
  • Not a very versatile product can be used on grass and light weeds.

 2. Worx WA0010 6-Pack Replacement Trimmer Line

The Worx trimmer line is an innovative and patented design, the helix structure makes it more durable than just string alternatives. The helix structure is constructed with copolymer nylon resin; this means that the line is exceptionally flexible and pliable. The result of this level of design integration means that the line can withstand force against hard objects, such as a wall or gravel without sustaining too much damage.

The design features of this line don’t stop there. The shape of the line has been designed and manufactured to lessen drag, increase aerodynamics and make cutting and strimming far more efficient. This line is made purely for efficiency and time saving, if you have a Worx trimmer, you can change the lines out in a matter of seconds. There is no reason to hand roll your own!

The tool also gives an exceptionally clean and even cut ensuring equal regrowth of the area you have trimmed. The high level of engineering is worth it when you look at your evenly trimmed verges and boarders.

Things We Liked

  • Innovative a patented design that makes strimming a dream
  • Aerodynamic design makes for efficiency saving
  • Durable and versatile, can withstand some impact
  • Even and equal strimming
  • Can change the line within 15 seconds on a Worx trimmer

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Given the level of engineering and design, having it withstand higher impact against brick work would be beneficial.
  • The line can become brittle overtime and snap if not kept in ideal conditions.

 3. Cyclone .065-Inch-by-300-Foot Spool Commercial Grade Trimmer Line

This trimmer line boasts that it is of a commercial standard, so wouldn’t be out of place in a tradesman work bag. The patented 6 bladed design is to ensure that the line can trim through almost any grass and weeds thrown at it.

Cyclone’s 6 blade design is one the thickest trimmer lines on the market. It comes in at .065 of an inch, which can result in the line being exceptionally noisy; however this line will tear up anything in its path. So if you can deal with the noise and you have a large and dense patch to clear, this might be the line for you.

It is a professional and commercial line. Its exceptionally durable and versatile, but you will need to make sure that your trimmer is able to accept a line that is this dense.

Things We Liked

  • Commercial grade trimming line
  • Created for professional use
  • Exceptionally strong
  • Patented 6 blade technology will chew through most landscapes
  • Perfect fitting and desired thickest line

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Very loud when in use
  • May not fit all trimmers, so make sure you check before fitment.

 4. Husqvarna 639005102 Titanium Force String Trimmer Line

Husqvarna is one of the best string trimmer lines that will fit trimmer heads. Whilst this is always worth checking before you make the purchase with your trimmer manufacturer. The line has a much smaller width than the other commercial alternative we have reviewed.

This is exceptionally durable; in fact it may be one of the most durable lines I have come across. The fact that it can fit in most trimmers and continues to work irrespective of what I throw at it is a testament to how good this line is.

Serious detail has been paid in the construction of this product. The weight and thickness of the trimmer line work together to reduce the sound output when you’re cutting through ensuring a level flight path. The line accelerates quickly and the attention to detail really shows, the cutting is even. Whilst I would always recommend safety gear when using tools of this nature. For a professional and commercial trimmer line, it is noticeably quieter than other alternatives.

Things We Liked

  • Professional standard trimmer line
  • Excellent manufacturing and construction make for a quality product
  • Very strong and durable, it will outlast other trimming line
  • Quieter than other alternatives
  • Will happily chew through pretty much anything you throw at it

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Whilst the line is exceptionally durable, repetitive movements against brick or other solid states will eventually break it off.
  • You must check that this line will fit your trimmer, if the fitment isn’t perfect the line will underperform.

 5. Greenworks .065" Single Line String Trimmer

The Greenworks single line string trimmer has been designed to be a more durable than the standard spools that come with Greenworks tools. With this in mind, they may or may not fit your trimmer so it is worth checking with the manufacturer before you make the purchase.

The .065 inch line is as thick as the others but hasn’t had the same level of precision engineering. It can be difficult to get this function to work efficiently. It can take two or three go’s to get the line to feed back out, slowing down the entire trimming process.

Once you’ve got the line to feed correctly, it appears there is a knack to this. The line is really very durable and a good alternative to other lines of the same size if you’re not using it in as commercial or professional setting. Whilst the engineering isn’t close to the same level as other brands, it does the job and it does it very well.

Things We Liked

  • Perfectly designed for professionals
  • May use for versatile aspects
  • Good length on the spool
  • .065 inch line that will chew through most things in your garden
  • Automated feeding process

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Seems to be designed for Greenworks appliances, so worth checking that this spool will fit your trimmer.
  • The automatic feed function can be problematic and take a while to get used to.

 6. DEWALT DWO1DT802 String Trimmer Line

The DEWALT is the go to choice for gardeners who use their trimmer to cut their edging grass. The line is thinner than commercial and professional alternatives, meaning using it a lot more ear friendly than the thicker lines. The twisted string is super effective at cutting through weeds and grass and doesn’t break off as frequently as expected.

This trimmer line has been engineered for less drag and level flight. It is especially effective in cordless trimmers made by DEWALT. The string line will fit other brands and models, however always check with the manufacturer before you purchase to make sure.

The string feeds out through its own housing, so there is no need to sit and restring old units. This saves time and makes strimming the lawn and edging quick and painless. For a string trimmer line, it also holds up pretty well when edging against brick work. Precisely, I was impressed that it didn’t fray like other string lines.

Things We Liked

  • Good for use around the garden, edging and verges
  • Durable string line with a strong twist design
  • Very quiet and easy to use and feed
  • Comes with its own housing so no need to restring
  • Doesn’t fray out as quickly as expected when used against hard surfaces

Things We Didn't Liked

  • If not kept in correct conditions the line can become brittle and weakened
  • The line can become entangled and twisted on itself quite easily

 7. Oregon 22-895 Magnum Gatorline Trimmer Line

The Oregon 22-895 trimmer line comes with professional and commercial grade quality. The high level of engineering standards that have been applied to the line will effectively tackle the most difficult jobs.

The patented magnum gatorline technology helps the line remain exceptionally durable, even when you throw the toughest work at it. The ‘supertwist’ around a core of high strength inner core, means that breakage is limited, even when you knock the line against brick or other surfaces.

Given the strength and durability of the line, it isn’t as thick as other commercial and professional alternatives. This gives you more of a chance at fitting it in your trimmer. It also means that using this line is quieter than other commercial alternatives and it will chomp through weeds at the same rate. This is all with the added bonus that this line really does last. This is one of the most durable lines I’ve used and the fact that it is in a widely available size is fantastic.

Things We Liked

  • This line will tackle most jobs you throw at it.
  • Always check to ensure your line will fit your tool, but the sizing means that it will fit most trimmers
  • As it is thinner than other commercial and professional alternatives, its a lot easier on the ears.
  • The design means that the line wont bind and weld together
  • Excellent strength with affordable costing

Things We Didn't Liked

  • The square edges of the line can slow down strimming as it is not as aerodynamic as other lines
  • The square line can waste power and is not as fuel efficient as circular or wrapped line

 8. Arnold .065" Maxi-Edge Commercial Trimmer Line

This trimmer line is designed for ease. It is a common size that will fit most trimmers with a 6 point line for increased cutting power. This 6 point cutting design increases cutting efficiency as it is more aerodynamic as other line. This will make a big difference especially for gas powered tools.

This is exceptionally strong for its smaller radius. Other commercial line tends to be a lot thicker to make sure that it doesn’t break off with rough use. It can take a large amount of abuse before there is any breakage.

While there is increased strength and efficiency in comparison to lines of this size, the Arnold doesn’t hold up as well against brick work as others. However, this is a small price to pay for far more efficient cutting. The 6 point design is light, durable and flexible enough to ensure limited breakage when in use. The fact that you can also hand wind it into your feeder makes the flow far better than those lines that come pre-attached to a head.

Things We Liked

  • Streamlined and well designed
  • 6 point start design increases power and fuel efficiency
  • Line design makes cutting far quieter
  • Smaller radius means less noise when cutting
  • Limited line breakage when used on green sites

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Doesn’t hold up as well as other line when edging grass against a brick wall
  • Due to self-feed nature, can become tough to wind if not left in correct conditions

 9. Maxpower 333695 Residential Grade Round .095" Trimmer Line

The Maxpower.095-Inch trimmer line advertises itself as a residential grade product. This one is specifically designed for homeowners, property owner, land owners who like to garden.

The engineering is not at the same level as commercial and professional line, but this is expected for a line that is designed for home use. The line comes in a size that is widely accepted in trimmer heads, .095 inch. Again it is always worth checking to make sure that your trimmer head will take this line.

Even though this is branded as a residential line, I was impressed with how strong and long lasting it was. It can handle most things a normal garden can throw at it and it did so without too much breakage and damage. As it is constructed from a nylon polymer, it is very easy to wind and is super pliable. This also lessens noise when in use and it feeds out of the trimmer really well.

Things We Liked

  • Good basic line
  • Easy to wind
  • Perfect for home use
  • Constructed with nylon polymer
  • Lower chance for early breakage and damage

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Can’t withstand impact against brick
  • Will only provide an even, level cut on grass.

 10. Rotary 12179 Vortex Trimmer Line

Rotary trimmer line is weighted at 4.6lbs; it provides exceptional cutting power which you would expect given the heavier line weight. It is exceptionally durable, you don’t need to wind it through as much as other products of the same make. It’ll last you far longer than other market equivalent.

The construction of the trimmer line is exceptionally well precision engineered. Even though it is heavier than other market counterparts, the weave gives you a reduce noise effect of around 50%. It means you can use the strimmer longer and don’t necessarily have to use ear protection when in use.

My favourite thing about this line is the engineering process behind it. The core construction reduces the energy output of approximately 30% meaning that using this line will burn through less fuel or electricity. That coupled with the fact that this line can handle being bumped against walls and rocks without suffering and snapping makes this is a money saving dream.

Things We Liked

  • Difficult to damage and snap
  • It comes with long lasting opportunity
  • Provides exceptional even and level cut
  • Reduces noise output
  • Uses less energy than market alternatives

Things We Didn't Liked

  • May not fit all strimmer heads
  • Check weight of the spool as it may be below advertised

What Type Of Trimmer Line Do I Need?

As the reviews have shown, there are many different types of trimmer line that come in different shapes, sizes, colours and materials. Each one has a particular item that it is good at and a particular job and function.

String Line

String line is best used for grass and other small vegetation such as nettles. String line tends to be lighter and a lot more pliable than other trimming line and what you would purchase if you wanted to clear a grassy area. String line is quieter than heavy alternative and is more fuel and energy efficient as it is relatively aerodynamic.

One of the key considerations to make with a string line, is what the string is made of and how it is put together. Some line consists of a single wrap and it’s made of a weaker polymer. Look for dual weave string, this design feature means that even with a heavy work load, the string will not fray as much as other single weave.

When using string trimmer line, be aware not to use it in too close proximity to brick walls or sidewalks. Impact against these types of surfaces will result in line fray and breakages. You will find that you will go through line far quicker. If you need to do work that involved trimming in these environments, look for an alternative to string.

Trimmer Line With A Strengthened Core

Commercial and professional line will often have a separate core. This additional core of the trimmer line makes the entire line less pliable, but it vastly increases the strength. The core is then covered in a composite which strengthens and protects the core. Some trimmer lines have three separate lines with cores that are then wound together.

Whilst the former are more common, they are often a lot thicker than string or other of sorts of trimmer line alternatives. This increased thickness needs to be taken into consideration when you are making the purchase. Some trimmer heads are designed to only accept line of a particular thickness. If you put in a line that is too small, it will feed out too quickly. Likewise, if you put in a line that is too thick, it may not feed out at all and there is a risk you could damage the equipment.

Different Shaped Trimmer Line

There are so many patented designs on the market for trimmer line. Some designs include stars, helix’s, wrapped, blades just to name a few. Each patented design has its own benefit and draw back. It is exceptionally dependant on the job that you want to do, this will dictate what kind of line you need.

If you are cutting through dense brush, you may select a wrapped type line. If you are dealing with 5ft of overgrown grass you may select a bladed type line. It is worth looking at what jobs you will be doing most frequently and making your decision based on that. It is also worth noting that some of these lines, whilst they are strong and are exceptional at trimming through stubborn overgrowth. This is due to the width of the line and how it will sit in your trimmer. As I have reiterated throughout, it is always worth checking with the manufacturer of your trimmer.  It ensures that the line you are choosing is the best one possible.

Sizing

Most trimmer line can fit into one of two categories, .065 inch or .095 inch. The .065 inch is usually for professional and commercial use, it is extremely thick line in comparison to the .095. The .065 inch is the line to use if you need to chew through a large area of overgrown bush. Each size has its own benefit, line that fall into the .095 inch category tend to be far quieter, more aerodynamic, even cut and easier to fit. The .065 inch can vastly increase your fuel and power consumption, but it can do the job that the smaller lines can’t.

Key Things To Consider Before Purchasing

Will you be doing big jobs with weeds and bush over 5feet tall? Or just pottering around the garden and manicuring your edges? Is my trimmer battery operated? Corded or petrol based? These are just considerations you need to think about before you make you purchase.

Whilst you wouldn’t think that how your trimmer is powered would make a difference in the trimming line you need to purchase. It is a consideration that needs to be taken into account. Some lines are so heavy duty and require a high power output that can only be given by petrol powered trimmers. These lines are usually advertised as for commercial and professional use and are often .065 inch thick, so may not fit smaller trimming units.

Some cordless batter powered units only have enough power capacity to deal with lightweight and thin trimmer line. This type of line is ideal for soft vegetation such as grass or weeds. Check with the manufacturer of your unit as they will recommend the best line to use.

What Happens If The Line You Fit Is Too Big?

More often than not, the line simply won’t feed into your unit, if you are having to force the line in, you can damage your trimmer and render it useless. If the line does fit in to the unit but the fitment is poor, you might find that the line continually snaps during use as it won’t be able to feed correctly.

Self-Wound Or Head Fitment?

You can purchase trimmer line on heads that just snap in to your unit. You also would need to check with the manufacturer of your unit to make sure the line and head you chose are compatible.

There is also the self-wound option, you cut the amount of line you need and then manually wind the spool. This option is usually for commercial or professional line, again you need to ensure that the line with feed correctly!

Automatic Feeding System

Most trimmers come with an automatic feeding system, meaning you don’t need to stop working when the line breaks. As long you have the correct line for your unit, there will be no issue with line feeing capability. However, if you have purchased incorrect line the automatic feeding system will not work appropriately. And, you will find yourself stopping mid-way through jobs to refeed the line through by hand. This is time consuming and can stop you working efficiently.

Safety Considerations

When operating any garden machinery, it is always a good idea to wear protective clothing such as gloves and safety goggles. Trimmer line rotates exceptionally fast and through centrifugal force, becomes rigid.

Therefore, it is entirely possible for the line to catch garden debris such as stones and flick them either towards your property or your eyes. Protective gloves are also a good idea, especially if dealing with a line weld or entanglement.

The head of the trimmer unit can become hot due to the kinetic energy, so it is wise to cover your hands before you deal with a caught line or missing line end.

It has been known for some trimmer line to weld together when in use, if this does happen let the entire trimmer unit cool down before you try and extract the damaged line. To limit this happening make sure you purchase high quality line, that is appropriate for the job at hand. This can be limited further by ensuring that the line you have bought will fit your trimmer correctly.

Noise protection may be necessary if you’re using a heavy duty thick line, especially in a petrol powered trimmer. The thicker the line and depending on how the line is made up, the less easily is passes through the air. If the line isn’t aerodynamic, the increased air resistance means there will be a lot of noise as a by-product. If you don’t want to wear ear protection when you are trimming, look for line that has level flight capabilities. Tools with such qualities have been designed for noise reduction. Line such as bladed or helix shapes would be far quieter.

Conclusion

When you are looking to purchase the best trimmer line, always make sure you are buying line that is appropriate for the job as well as ensuring that the line fits your tool. This will make gardening, landscaping and working so much easier and so much more enjoyable. The type of trimmer you have, be it petrol, corded or battery will also make a huge difference in your purchasing considerations.

Some petrol trimmers are exceptionally loud when paired with a particular line. On the other hand, some battery operated trimmers can’t work with exceptionally thick multiply line due to the power needed to generate centrifugal force. These factors are all worth checking before you make your purchase and will make your life easier when the trimming line arrives.

Buying trimmer line doesn’t have to be stressful, as long as you do a little reading before you make your purchase you won’t have any problems. Happy trimming!
