Greenworks Lawn Mower Reviews in 2019 - 7 Best Picks from The Editor

Mowing your lawn is one of the main forms of garden maintenance. Whilst we all know that we mow our lawn to stop it growing out of control and looking like a meadow, there are other benefits to regular mowing.

When you mow your lawn regularly, you are promoting the healthy regrowth of grass. Through giving all the plants a level playing field, they are all able to access the same amount of sunlight and nutrients, therefore the grass grows thick and even. Regular mowing decreases the chance of bald patches on your lawn, as all plants are the same height. It also makes weeding far easier as you are able to clearly see weeds among the grass.

With mowing being so good for garden maintenance, it can be difficult to choose which mower is best for you and for your lawn. To give you a solid solution, here I do the top 7 Greenworks lawn mowers review. All mowers I’m reviewing are battery or corded, so not only do you not have to spend out on petrol, they are also better for the environment. Corded and battery mowers are also far quieter than the alternative petrol models, lighter and easier to manoeuvre.

The 7 Best Greenworks Lawn Mowers On The Market

 1. Greenworks 20" 40V Twin Force Cordless Lawn Mower 25302

The Greenworks twin force cordless lawn mower boast an impressive 20 inch cutting deck makes light work of even big jobs. The cutting system levels off grass cleanly and crisply, the added mulching system makes unloading it a dream. The twin blade system and large cutting deck means you can cover more area than other mowers, in a faster time.

Even though the Greenworks 20inch’s deck is big, the mobility and manoeuvrability of the mower is fantastic. Due to the light weight nature of design, it feels like you are using one with a lot less power. The device isn’t self-propelled, but in this instance, you don’t miss this feature as it weighs no more than a decent vacuum.

The dual battery system is a genius idea that means you can get those big jobs done and out the way. The primary 4aH lithium Ion battery and secondary 2aH lithium ion backup battery means that the mower has a run time of around 60 minutes. As both batteries are lithium ion, they are also exceptionally quick to charge.  This mower is a lot quieter than a petrol lawn mower of the same size, so much so in fact that ear protection wasn’t required when in use.

This mower is ideal for people with larger plots of land who don’t wish to be tethered by a corded lawn mower system.

Things We Liked

  • SMARTCUT technology, exclusive to GreenWorks
  • Light and Portable
  • Small cutting deck, ideal for smaller spaces
  • Dual battery system
  • Cordless and so quiet during the operation.

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Must remember to charge batteries before use
  • Not effective for large gardens with high verges

 2. GreenWorks 16" 10 Amp Corded Lawn Mower 25142

This lawn mower is an ideal choice for someone with a smaller plot of land or garden. This Greenworks lawn mower has an impressive 16 inch cutting deck and a 10amp motor that delivers enough power that will happy mow through long thick grass all day. The large cutting deck is impressive due to the fact that even with a deck this size, the entire unit only weighs 33.3lbs. This is all whilst it retains its exceptional manoeuvrability and grass cutting capabilities.

The switch between mulching grass and bagging grass is super easy and a real benefit. Some days I don’t mind carrying bags of offcuts to the compost heap. Other days, especially when I want it done quickly, I use the mulching setting. Both features are easy to use and it is really easy to switch between the two.

This lawn mower has 5 adjustable height settings that will help you get the perfect cut on your lawn. These settings are easy to find and easier to adjust, it makes mowing the lawn less of a hassle or a chore. The way the mower has been designed is to accommodate all types of gardens, from those with patios, flower beds or just a lot of grass. The height adjustment settings and the carefully selected size of the wheels means that you can gently trim just the very tips of the blades.

Things We Liked

  • Tethered and very lightweight device
  • Exceptionally quick operation system
  • Smooth power output with mulching setting
  • No need to store oil or petrol
  • Powerful motor with good manoeuvrability

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Not ideal for mowing large spaces
  • Could benefit from more power

 3. Greenworks 21" 40V Self-Propelled Cordless Lawn Mower MO40L02

This is a self-propelled power house of a lawn mower. You would expect this level of power from a petrol mower counterpart. Only you get the added benefit of not having to keep gasoline in the house and also when in use you can have a conversation with the person standing next to you. It really is a very quiet efficient unit. The self-propelled feature makes light work of even the biggest lawns. It makes the entire unit pretty much weightless as it drives itself around the lawn. You are only really needed to keep the power lever in the correct position.

It has a 21 inch cutting deck with dual blade set up to make cutting the lawn far more efficient. Unlike some other mowers, there are three ways you can chose to discharge the waste from this unit, either into a bag, at the side of the mower or by mulching. Each feature will suit each person differently. I prefer to use the bag, which is light and easy to transport when full. Due to how efficient the cutting deck is, you do need to make a few stops (depending on the size of the area you are cutting) to empty out the bag.

It comes with an awesome design feature of dual battery storage. If you’re having a big job, this makes it easier to switch out the batteries in the middle. The design feature that really sets this mower out from the rest is the fact that you can store it vertically. The mower is a large unit (21 inch cutting deck) but it can be cleverly collapsed and folded to take up a massive 70% less space than a standard non-foldable lawn mowing unit.  You no longer need a mower shed, as it collapses so small it can be kept in with your other tools. This feature doesn’t impact the integrity of rigidity of the unit, as the clever design makes sure that no essential structural features are compromised.

Things We Liked

  • 21 inch cutting deck
  • 3 way discharge selection
  • Self-propelled unit
  • Additional battery storage capacity
  • Amazing collapsible design

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Working single battery runtime of around 20 minutes
  • Brushless unit

 4. GreenWorks 20" 12 Amp Corded Electric Lawn Mower 25022

The 20 inch corded mower is a fully equipped one. If you’ve got a small garden or even a bigger paddock, the smooth and consistent power delivery will help you get on top of the over grown grass or just give it a trim in no time. I particularly liked the 3 settings that come as standard. With the mulching being particularly effective, especially when the lawn was dry and if it wasn’t, directing the waste to the bag was just as easy.

The 20 inch cutting deck means fewer trips up and down and you can cover far more ground than with a smaller deck. Even though it’s steel construction, it doesn’t feel heavy and cumbersome and is essentially a plug and play mower, no need for a string start, just press the start button. Because it is corded, the power delivery is excellent. No lagging or dead spots, just smooth delivery.

The foldable storage option is what really sold this to me, it saves so much space in the shed and isn’t something that I would have considered as space waster before. The fact that the handle bars fold over themselves means you have an additional 50% more storage than with a fixed handled mower.

Things We Liked

  • 20 inch steel deck
  • Smooth power delivery
  • Effective cutting at most heights
  • Seven height settings
  • Easy to manoeuvre

Things We Didn't Liked

  • The mulching feature may struggle with wet grass
  • The motor is open to the elements, so once you’ve finished, clean it off.

 5. Greenworks 21" 13 Amp Corded Electric Lawn Mower MO13B00

The Greenworks 13 Amp Model is the one to go for if you’ve got a bigger than average garden that can prove problematic with smaller corded electric mowers. This model features a 21 inch cutting deck which is contrasted of steal giving it an edge over other models of the same size which are often plastic. Whilst this is a rugged mower, you won’t be able to mulch up trees and rocks that are in your path.

I liked the adjustable 7 height setting on the unit. It makes for light work regardless of the garden terrain you are on. The machine is simple to set and adjust and means you don’t have to stop mowing for long.

The power draw of this particular model is lovely and smooth which is what you expect from a corded mower. Because it is corded, there is no heavy engine to worry about or battery pack to increase the weight making the unit light and manoeuvrable.

Things We Liked

  • 21 inch cutting deck
  • Steel construction
  • Strong and even power draw
  • 3 settings; cutting, mulching and bagging
  • Ideal for larger lawns that are proving difficult

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Maximum power is limited to 120v
  • Mulching can be slow

 6. Greenworks PRO 21" 80V Cordless Lawn Mower GLM801601

If the idea of a corded mower isn’t for you, or you just want to change to a cordless, look no farther than the Greenworks pro. It features a 21 inch cutting deck, making cutting more efficient and an 80v output which will make short work out of most gardens. Usually, I remain unconvinced of cordless mowers, but this one proved me wrong. The cutting time, even in harsh and longer grass was not far off the 60 minutes it advertises.

One of the best features about this mower is the vertical storage. Having the ability to hang it up out of the way is an excellent feature. It is also easy to do by yourself, something I wouldn’t have considered that I needed up until I used this.

The power delivery from the batteries is lovely and smooth; you don’t get any dead spots even when mowing through tougher grass. The mulching is a little slower and uses more power which is to be expected but all in all it is an excellent mower.

Things We Liked

  • Up to 60 minutes run time
  • Smooth power delivery
  • No dead spots even through thicker grass
  • Vertical storage
  • 21 Inch cutting deck

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Slightly heavier than the corded options due to battery weight
  • Mulching is slow and can use up power

 7. Greenworks 18" 12 Amp Corded Electric Lawn Mower 25012

This Greenworks model is ideal for smaller gardens and for someone that wants a light weight mower that will get the job done and keep their garden manageable. Just because it is lightweight does not mean that it doesn’t perform. The machine is far more structurally rigid than plastic alternatives.

It comes with most of the features I have come to expect from Greenworks, the 7 setting height adjustment along with 2 in 1 cutting features (bag option and mulching). The cutting deck is slightly smaller than other products I have reviewed, which makes it ideal for smaller lawns and tighter spaces.

Because this is a corded mower its lovely and light, meaning that it is very manoeuvrable which is a real pro when you are working in smaller gardens. The 18 inch cutting deck isn’t too big or overbearing, and gives you an even cut throughout.

Things We Liked

  • The machine is light weight
  • You’ll find it easy to operate
  • Nice level cut, even on uneven terrain
  • Consistent power delivery
  • Ideal for smaller gardens

Things We Didn't Liked

  • Doesn’t fold like other Greenworks mowers
  • Mulching wet grass can take longer than cutting

Why Should You Purchase Greenworks Lawn Mower?

Greenworks mower provide good quality products that will keep performing. Other market alternatives are often constructed with plastic and won’t last as long as the steel basis these models have.

The corded and cordless models are also carbon neutral, so you lessen your environmental impact and carbon footprint by making the switch to Greenworks. Their innovative design features are there to make your life easier and mowing more enjoyable. The 3 in 1 features are fantastic as well as the storage options available to you.

Why Shouldn’t You Purchase?

If you are cutting on an industrial or commercial level, then a Greenworks mower won’t be powerful enough for the job at hand. These mowers are designed for all types of garden and some paddock use, depending on the size and condition. They won’t replace your petrol-powered ride on mower as that is unrealistic. But they do provide you with a good tool for your large garden or small paddock.

Considerations Before You Make The Purchase

Depending on the size of your garden or paddock will depend if you want a corded or cordless. Both come with distinct advantages and disadvantages. If you are used to a corded mower, then you will be used to being aware of where the power cable is at all times. If you haven’t used a corded mower before and don’t feel as though you want to start now, a cordless is the choice for you.

Tethered Lawn Mowers

When using a tethered lawn mower, make sure you are careful not to mow over the cable. Whilst it seems like a simple enough consideration, it is worth while putting in a circuit breaker to make sure that if this does happen, you are not seriously injured. Also invest in a brightly coloured extension cable, so that you can see it against the green of your lawn, orange is ideal, this will help to eliminate possible accidents.

Blades

If your blade system becomes jammed, make sure that you have either unplugged your lawn mower entirely or disconnected the battery. Whilst this may seem like overkill, you don’t want anything to knock the starting lever whilst you are removing the blockage in the blades. If you have a blocked mulching channel, always use protective gloves to clear the blockage. You may not be reaching down far enough to touch to the blades, something sharp may have become logged and protective gear will stop you becoming injured.

Stones and Gravel

Before mowing, I recommend using the Greenworks 40V 150 MPH variable speed cordless blower to clear the lawn of leaves and other garden debris. I know this may seem excessive but by removing this, you can see if there are any stones or pebbles on the lawn. If a blade hits a stone or pebble, it can either damage the blade and then elements of the lawn mower.  It can become a missile which can damage windows, brick work or someone. It may take an additional 10 minutes, but it is well worth it.

Battery Lawn Mowers

Battery mowers are fantastic because you don’t need to consider cable safety whilst you are using it. However they do come with their own set of safety considerations, namely the battery.

The Greenworks batteries are an innovative lithium Ion battery, whilst it is exceptionally rare for these to leak. You do need to make sure you look after them in the correct manner. Keep them out of direct sunlight, only charge them using the correct chargers that have come from the manufacturer and don’t attempt to open the battery. As long as these considerations are taken into account, you won’t have any problems with your battery powered lawn mower.

Final Thoughts

Greenworks have created some fantastic mowers for you to use on your lawns and paddocks. Their innovative design features take out the need for multiple tools to do one job. All of the mowers come with 7 height settings as standard, so no matter how unruly your lawn is you can set the height to make your life easier.

The innovative storage solutions help keep your shed or garage free of clutter and make life easier when you’re taking the mower in and out. Greenworks make fantastic reliable mowers, ideal for all types of gardens. The only thing left is to choose which one you want.
