The 5 Best Shop Fox Dust Collectors

 1. SHOP FOX W1685 1.5-Horsepower Dust Collector

Top 5 Shop Fox Dust Collector Reviews in 2020 - Tested & Compared - Tools DiarySHOP FOX W1685 1.5-Horsepower Dust Collector

This particular dust collector boasts a 1.5 horsepower engine and has the cubic feet rating to match. It is an exceptionally powerful, but don’t let the silence fool you. The air intake is quite strong, which means it can pull in those larger chunks of debris and dust from your work station keeping your area clean and safe. This model is ideal for larger work spaces which you are constantly moving about in, using different tools.

The powder coating on the unit makes it look sleek and modern, but it also makes it resistant to the standard workshop bangs and scratches. I end up moving my dust collector around quite a bit, whilst this one is heavy it is easy to move from location to location which was a pleasant surprise. The powder coated finish holds up well given the everyday knocks an abuse it suffers.

One advantages of this shop fox is that it comes as 240v as standard, some power tools that I have purchased previously haven’t done this and has caused me to rewire. The power draw of this dust collector is immense and you won’t regret the purchase. The only real downside to this particular model is the assembly time required. Make sure you read all the instructions thoroughly and give yourself the morning to do it.

Things We Liked

  • Exceptional power draw
  • Will pick up the bigger chunks of debris thanks to the CFM rating
  • Ideal tool for larger workshops
  • Can be mobile or static
  • Power coating finish

Things We Didn't Like

  • This will take a while to assemble and install
  • Some of the connections are flimsy but can be rectified with your own additions, such as tape.

 2. SHOP FOX W1727 1 HP Dust Collector

Top 5 Shop Fox Dust Collector Reviews in 2020 - Tested & Compared - Tools DiarySHOP FOX W1727 1 HP Dust Collector Review

This shop Fox is the little brother of the W1685; it comes with prewired at 110v so it is smaller and a lot more mobile than bigger models. One is a good compromise if you are hobbyist working in a smaller location (such as a shed or basement) where you don’t have the same power draw as your house.

I was surprised at how well it worked with table and band saws, given the smaller size of other alternatives. It had no problems at pulling in all the small and medium sized chips as well as most of the dust.

The shop fox is really quiet, more so than a shop vac, again this was a nice surprise, to the point where you forget it is actually on. It is quicker to assemble than other models, but this comes down to the size of unit. You can be ready to go with it in under an hour.

Things We Liked

  • Ideal for a hobbyist who works in a smaller space
  • Good for basements and sheds with low power draw
  • Easy to move around
  • Power coating finish
  • Easy and rapid assembling

Things We Didn't Like

  • Easy and rapid assembling
  • The CFM flow is lower than alternatives so won’t pick up larger pieces of debris

 3. Shop Fox W1826 Wall Dust Collector

Top 5 Shop Fox Dust Collector Reviews in 2020 - Tested & Compared - Tools DiaryShop Fox W1826 Wall Dust Collector

The Shop Fox W1826 is one of the most basic and stripped back dust collectors available on the market. What makes this thing so practical is that it can collect dust and debris right at the source making your cleaning up efforts so much easier.  I found hanging it on the wall behind my table saw. It was the ideal way to maximise its efforts, it pretty much collected all dust and debris throughout my use of the tool. One little feature that I really liked was the see through plastic window that shows you how much dust you have collected. It seems simple but makes all the difference.

This model can be adapted from 120 to 240v which is ideal depending on your setup.  As I was in a garage, I could draw the 240v and it was comfortably operating at that level. Again, like the other shop fox models, it is quiet. A low hum is emitted throughout its use which makes it far more accommodating than a shop vac. You also don’t have to deal with miles of intrusive induction tubes which makes everything far easier

Assembly is quick and painless, as long as you follow the instructions, you’ll be ready to do within the hour. It is worth noting that if you are looking to wall mounts it. This dust collector is a heavy piece of equipment, so make sure that you have people on standby to help.

Things We Liked

  • Simple stripped back design
  • Collects dust right from the source
  • No induction tubes clogging up your work station
  • 120v or 240v draw
  • Easy assembling with ready to go facilities

Things We Didn't Like

  • Heavy, you may need more than one person to help you hang it.
  • Cotton bags makes for a magnet for dust, so can be difficult to keep clean.

 4. SHOP FOX W1687 3-Horsepower 2,800 CFM Dust Collector

Top 5 Shop Fox Dust Collector Reviews in 2020 - Tested & Compared - Tools DiarySHOP FOX W1687 3-Horsepower 2,800 CFM Dust Collector Review

This one is not for the faint hearted. The three-horsepower engine provides enough suction that you need a big open work shop to get the most from it. The CFM rating of this particular model makes sure that it will happily suck in most of the saw dust and debris from your work, to the point where you won’t need to dust anymore.

As it is a more powerful unit, it is louder than the smaller alternatives, but this is to be expected. I really liked the four fitting inlets; you can have it set up so that you don’t have to constantly move the unit around for maximum performance. This is good, because the unit is exceptionally heavy; it is not one for mobile use.

Assembly does take longer than the other fox shop models, but this is to be expected given the size and calibre of the unit. Don’t let that deter you though, if you have a big enough space and use your tools frequently enough to warrant a dust collector of this size, this is the one for you. You will need to ensure that you can give it the correct power draw for it to operate effectively.

Things We Liked

  • The 2800 CFM will collect almost all debris, dust and sawdust
  • 3 horsepower engine
  • Quiet, given the size and power of the unit
  • Large bags to limit emptying
  • Can attach four tools at once

Things We Didn't Like

  • Not for small work spaces
  • Not ideal for first time users/hobbyists with the incorrect power draw

 5. Shop Fox W1823 Portable Cyclone Dust Collector

Top 5 Shop Fox Dust Collector Reviews in 2020 - Tested & Compared - Tools DiaryShop Fox W1823 Portable Cyclone Dust Collector Review

This particular Shop Fox is designed to be fully portable. This is a good option for someone with a large workspace who needs to be able to move the dust collector around. As it designed to be fully portable, this model comes with a remote control included. It has a really good range and can be operated from one side of my workshop to the other.

The way it is designed makes it easy to manoeuvre and it isn’t so heavy that you won’t be able to move it yourself. It isn’t as powerful as other alternatives, but this is offset by the fact that you can push it to any part of your workshop that you require. It has a 1.5 horsepower engine with a CFM rating of 806. I like the Y fitting that comes as standard, anymore and it may not perform as well, two machines at once is enough.

As it is a mobile unit, it is not as quiet as the statics. Whilst it isn’t as loud as running a shop vac, it is louder than static alternatives. The dust bag that it comes with is a good size and you won’t be emptying it as frequently as you would others. It also comes with a transparent inlay, so there is no guess work involved with how much dust is in there.

Things We Liked

  • Fully portable
  • Good power draw
  • Can attach two tools simultaneously
  • Comes with a remote control
  • Good size dust bag and see through panel

Things We Didn't Like

  • Not as quiet as other models of the same size
  • Lose out on power as you are offsetting that against the portable nature

Why Should You Purchase A Shop Fox Dust Collector?

So we know that a Shop Fox collector does exactly that, but why do they often find themselves at the bottom of people’s lists when it comes to items to have in their work shops or sheds? People will often chose purchasing new tools over buying dust collectors, but having one in your in your shed can provide you with many benefits, most of which relate to safety.

Respiratory Issues

Whilst research is still continuing into how exactly dust can damage respiratory health, there is no question about the fact that it does. Long term exposure to work shop dust can have an array health impacts, from increased congestion issues, asthma and even cancer. Just from a health stand point alone, investing in a dust collector is a good option.

A quick search will bring up an array of standards that industrial and commercial units have to limit the effects of dust on their employees. So why wouldn’t you afford yourself the same care in your own home or workshop?

A collection of dust and wood shavings that haven’t been cleared away are a very real fire risk. All it takes is one spark and that could be your workshop, house or garage up in flames. Dust collectors minimise the risk of fires by removing the fuel aspect from the fire triangle. Make your work area a safer space by investing in a good brand dust collector like Shop Fox.

Facts To Consider Before You Buy

We’ve established that a dust collector is not only good for a clean workshop, they are also good for your overall health, especially if you spend alone time on the tools. So what aspects do you need to think about before you take the plunge and purchase one, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Size of Your Work Space

Are you in a small shed or a large basement? The first thing to consider is where you will be using your shop fox, if you have a large open space, then you will need a bigger dust collector, or even a portable one. If you are in a smaller space, then you can look toward the wall mounted or smaller options.

How Many Tools Do You Use?

If you find yourself mainly using your chop saw or miter saw over the weekend, a wall mounted option may be the one for you, especially if you are in a smaller space. The shop fox wall dust collector will collect at source and keep your area clean and free from dust. If you are using upward of three tools over a larger area, the 3 horsepower one might be the one for you.

CFM and Other Specifications

There is a lot of physics behind dust collectors and how they work, it’s all about static air pressure, how much air can move in relation to how fast it can move the air into the collector. The figure that we need to assess before purchase is the CFM or the cubic feet per minute, this is the volume of air that the collector is capable of moving. You will find that your tools will tell you the minimum required CFM you need from a dust collector for it to work effectively. The higher the number, the more air the dust collector can move, therefore the more dust is collected.

What About The Drawbacks?

It seems that most of the issues arising from Fox Shop dust collector is that of the assembly time. We found the more complex dust collectors could take anywhere between 2 to 4 hours to assemble depending on how competent you are. The best advice we can give on this front is allow at least half a day, for whatever model you have purchased. You don’t want to rush putting it together and then miss an integral part or step.

Make sure you consistently consult the instructions on how to assemble and if you are wall mounting your Fox Shop, have another pair of hands on standby. Dust collectors are not the same as shop vacs and won’t provide you with the same level of power, but they will give you a quieter and better working environment.

Editors’ Opinion

For years jet dust collectors have dominated the market. This might be the reason why so many people have been averse to purchasing a dust collector sooner, as they are an expensive piece of equipment. Fox Shop provides a very viable market alternative. They offer a huge range of dust collectors, spanning from your basic stripped back wall mounted option for the hobbyists among us.

All the way to the 3 horse power units that will clear almost any work shop. They are well constructed with quality materials and parts. They provide a real alternative to other products on the market and give you an array of choice, from power, voltage, sizing and capability.

Final Thoughts

A dust collector shouldn’t be at the bottom of your list when you are thinking of things to purchase for your workshop or shed. Not only do they keep your area free from dust and debris, they will also help reduce the risk of fire and respiratory issues.

Consider what type of Shop Fox you want before you make the purchase and consider the type of area that you work in. If you have a small tool bench, look to purchase the wall mounted option. If you have a big area and run four tools simultaneously, the 3 horsepower engine might well be the one for you. You can even purchase the portable unit if you are moving around a lot. A good dust collector should be your priority for your work area, make sure that you look to Fox Shop for your purchase as they will have a dust collector that will fit your needs.
